Support Orange County COMPACT Program

August 2nd, 2010

Recognizing the need to reverse the rising dropout rate and assist high school students, in April of 1988, Orlando Mayor Bill Frederick called upon a group of leaders to go beyond just an examination of the problem and to take it a step further to developing a program that would “promote opportunity for all of our youth – especially the less advantaged – to become productive members and part of the mainstream of the Orlando Community.”

This group became the Mayor’s Commission on Youth Opportunities, and quickly resolved to approach the challenges through a broad-based effort involving Orange County Public Schools, private businesses, government and the Greater Orlando Chamber of Commerce.

On April 4, 1989, the Orlando/Orange County COMPACT Program became a reality. It officially began with a pilot program of 14 students at Jones High School, mentored by 13 professionals from Coopers & Lybrand and AT&T District Manager A. George Fuller. In February 1994, Mr. Fuller became the third Executive Director of COMPACT when he became a loaned executive from AT&T. Upon his retirement in May, 1994, he was hired by OCPS to resume duties as the director of COMPACT.

Since its’ inception in 1989, COMPACT has served more than 10,000 students. For the 2007-2008 school year, it is operational at 13 school sites:Citrus Elementary,Colonial 9th Grade Center, Dr. Phillips High School, Gateway School, Jones High School, Life Skills Center, Memorial Middle School, Mollie Ray Elementary School, Oakridge High School, Orange Center Elementary School, Robert Hungerford Prep High School, Three Points Elementary School, and Timber Creek High School.

    LET’S GO!

    June 14th, 2010

If you know me, you know I love my school. But how could I be a Tiger and not love Jones High? It’s the place that, as a youngster, I was introduced to the school that was “Pushing a Positive Attitude”. It’s the place that was run by a passionate, authoritative principal named Clara Walters. It’s the place where the athletic department was headed by a cool, but no-nonsense man named “CC”. It’s the place where the band was headed by a living legend named James “Chief” Wilson. It’s the place where you were privileged to have a spunky but straightforward math teacher named Barbara Burns, a P.E. teacher who was a Tiger through and through named Ernestine Embry, or a meticulous music teacher named Edna Hargrett. It’s the place where I learned about pride.

That pride still runs through these orange and green veins of mine. It’s that same pride that is the motivation behind this commentary and those to follow. I have soooo many things I want to discuss. Like, have you joined the Booster Club? When’s the last time you supported a Jones High School function or event? When’s the last time you visited the school? Do you still talk about Jones High with the same pride and vigor as you did when you were in school?

I have a lot to say.

So come with me as I share with you “all things Jones High”. It’s an honor to be able to have this platform. I’m soooo ready. Are you? Let’s go!
